The Pilates Professional's Guide to Customizing Movement Patterns 

Pilates is a wonderful system of exercise that has helped many people restore and maintain their health. In this workshop we will apply the latest musculo-skeletal and arthrokinematics research to explore new ways of choreographing and cueing Pilates exercises. With this experience and information, you will be able to create thousands of specific challenges to help invigorate and appropriately challenge yourself and your clients. We will also explore many of the mythes that may be undermining our attempts to help our clients.

Here are a few topics that we will explore:

  • Postural analysis:  Observing our clients and their motions, we will explore the misconceptions that are typically made about structure and muscle tightness. We will also discuss new approaches to understanding how to improve posture.
  • The mechanisms that control the tension that a muscle produces.
  • The causes of limits in range motion.  
  • Mechanics - moment arms, restraint, lines of force so that we can understand the mechanics of Pilates exercises. 
  • Alignment: what are we aligning? 
  • Stretching - What gives? Ha! 
  • Defining stability and how to help our clients truly achieve it.
  • An introduction to the musculoskeletal mechanics of respiration.
  • An introduction to the mechanics of scoliosis.
  • What does a leg length discrepancy tell you?
