Control and alignment of the core are major points of emphasis during a Pilates workout. Let’s explore exactly what this means. By taking a detailed look at the bones, ligaments, nerves, tendons, and muscles of the spine and ribcage, let’s see how these structures are designed to move and how they support motion. We will also break down the mechanics of breathing and observe how the muscles of respiration can influence spinal posture and motion. This analysis will help us fine-tune exercises and create new ones that comply with the design and function of the core.

To facilitate an optimal learning experience, we are offering an exciting, new format for SFA: Pilates. It has two components:
1) A webinar that can be attended live, in the comfort of your own home or office, and/or downloaded for later viewing.
2 ) A live workshop that applies the material from the webinar to specific Pilates exercises.

In the webinar, here’s what we’ll cover:

- The structure and function of the spine and ribcage.
- The muscles that control the alignment and motion of the spine and ribcage.
- The mechanics of breathing and how it influences the position of the spine.
- A rationale for using the mechanics of breathing to design customized Pilates exercises.
- How to determine the resistance profile of an exercise and the many ways that it is useful and important.

In the workshop, we will have 2 hours of practical application of the concepts that were discussed in the webinar. From cueing and custom exercise design to muscular participation and joint forces, the workshop brings it all together.
