The core is a perfectly orchestrated combination of motion and stillness. The ribs, sternum, spine, and pelvis are the foundation of the core. We will explore the musculature (over 4 dozen muscles!) that controls posture and movement of the core. The mechanics of breathing influences the position and movement of the ribs, the shoulder complexes, and the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. We will synthesize this information to enhance the design of core exercises found in yoga, Pilates, and circuit training, including novel strategies for breathing.
